2016. What a year. Some would say it was good, that they loved it and they felt like they conquered 2016.
Others would say that 2016 was the worst year ever and that they are ready for it to be over. Bring on 2017!
A new year typically means “new me”, “new goals”, “resolutions”. You set for yourself the typical of getting into a healthier you – “I’m going to the gym everyday”, “no more pizza!”.
I did a little research and according to Statistic Brain, the following are the top 10 resolutions for 2017:
- lose weight
- getting organized
- spend less, save more
- enjoy life to the fullest
- staying fit and healthy
- learn something exciting
- quit smoking
- help others in their dreams
- fall in love
- spend more time with family
Pretty good right? Any of those things on your list?
Not going to lie, there are a few on my list as well. But I can’t help but have my list read a little differently this coming year. I take in what 2016 consisted of for me and man, I can’t help but want to continue to build off what I’ve learned and been through already.
This past year was a year of soaring and growth. I learned to let go of things that I had no control over. I was inspired in ways I had never been before. Met people from different stages of life and from different parts of the world. Experienced so many moments where I felt so loved and moments where I felt very lonely – even in the crowded room. There were tears – probably more tears to date! Tears of joy, tears of sadness. Said goodbye more than I would have liked. Gained a new understanding and love for coffee. Learned to appreciate moments where I didn’t have plans or anyone to hangout with. Traveled across the country with my mom – 8 states. But best of all, took on the best adventure of a lifetime with God by giving up everything I had to follow Him FULLY.
While I do still have a “2017 Resolutions” list, I want to try and approach it differently. Having a resolutions list can sometimes seem so stressful and almost unachievable by what we put on it. We get so upset and angry with ourselves when we see that by the end of January (or first two weeks for me) we’ve already abandoned that list we so carefully thought out and have eaten pizza for dinner every night and haven’t gone to the gym in a week. This has aways seemed to be the trend for me every year.
If there’s something that I’ve learned from 2016 is that the gospel saves and liberates. The gospel sets us FREE from the chains of sin. From the chains of this world. So, my friend, allow the gospel to liberate you from your resolutions having power over you. PRAY that God would be the center focus of 2017. Pray for God’s help in everything that you put in that resolutions list. And ask yourself, and ask God – for 2017 – What will God do in me and through me in 2017?
This world is not our homeland. We await the day that Jesus returns to set everything right. That all the hurt, all the brokenness, the homelessness, the crime, etc…will all be wiped and all will be perfect again. Our happiness is not determined by us accomplishing what we put on that list. Our happiness is fueled by the belief in the return of Jesus and the full inheritance we will receive.
Allow that to be your focus this coming year. Commit yourself to serving God fully and sacrificially. Ask God to have your heart break for what breaks His. And above all, PRAY. Pray that He would help you, change you, bring you to life. Pray that He would renew your soul. I pray that for you and I pray that more specifically for myself, sweet friends. I pray that this will be on your list as well. I pray that if we don’t accomplish everything on our resolutions list, that we may be able to be okay with that and not be too hard on ourselves.

2. Read 12 books.
3. Learn how to surf.
4. Memorize Scripture every month.
5. Ditch phone when eating with other people…
